Mikhail Ivanovich Lebedev was born at Dorpat and studied at St. Petersburg with Maksim Vorobiev, whose spectacular landscapes inspired Lebedev's own efforts in that genre. Lebedev also worked in Rome from 1835 to 1837, but tragically died at age twenty-six of cholera.
