Losenko, A. P. "Cain". 1768

Notes: Cain Losenko excelled at this sort of large nude drawings, which served as preliminary studies for history paintings. Painters used these drawings to define the physique and pose of each figure, which they then clothed and considered in additional drawings and painted studies before rendering them in the final canvas. In this work, entitled "Cain," one finds a Russian adaptation of the Italo-French academic nude. Losenko was the first Russian artist to emphasize anatomical accuracy in his nude studies.
