Makovsky, V. E. "Crash of the Bank". 1880

Notes: Crash of the Bank The financial ruin and personal tragedy stemming from a bank crash were the sort of real-life events with which the average person was all too familiar and with which they could identify. It was thus the perfect subject for a member of the Wanderers. Genre painter Vladimir Makovsky distinguished himself from his fellow Peredvizhniki or Wanderers by the liveliness of his portraits of common life. His work often sparkles with humor, compassion, and beautifully rendered details. At the same time, however, Makovsky was also capable of depicting the grim realities of peasant life.
