Repin, I. E. "On a Turf Bench, Detail". 1876

Notes: Detail from "On a Turf Bench" As this canvas demonstrates, Repin adopted only selected elements of late-nineteenth-century French landscape painting. Though he uses the looser, spontaneous brushwork associated with the Impressionists, he remained committed to using landscape as a vehicle for storytelling, as opposed to the Impressionist use of landscape as means of capturing the effects of light and color.
