Notes: Venus and Adonis
Like his painting "Mercury and Argus," this large canvas by Sokolov may be considered a Russian translation of the mythological paintings produced by Batoni, his teacher. Here, the handsome youth, Adonis, is seen with Venus (Aphrodite). Their union, one of many for Venus, the goddess of love, produced a boy and a girl.
