Tropinin, V. A.
"Woman in a Window". 1841
Notes: Woman in a Window (Treasurer's Wife)
This portrait of a woman leaning on a windowsill relies on a long tradition of such depictions; it was an especially popular pose in seventeenth-century Holland and in the nineteenth century appears with some regularity in German painting. The choice of this pose and the refined manner in which the painting is executed reflect Vasily Tropinin's exposure to a range of continental painting.
