Alexandre Alexandrovich Sapozhnikov was a wealthy merchant from Astrakhan who sat for Vasily Tropinin in 1852. In its polished presentation of a successful middle class businessman, this fine portrait of Sapozhnikov shares much with Biedermeier and Victorian painting of the mid-nineteenth century.
