Notes: The People's Land.
Grigoriev became involved with the World of Art, when it reconvened in 1910 after a six-year hiatus. The decorative inflection of his work, which can be seen in "The People's Land" (see ImageBase), probably resulted from his association with that group. The humanitarian, utopian theme of that work, however, is undoubtedly the product of post-Revolutionary rather than World of Art values, which promoted an "art for art's sake" aesthetic. The communist regime eventually came to consider that aesthetic suspect, even decadent.
