If one compares this painting with the artist's collage "Still-Life with Saw" of 1920 (see ImageBase), one finds that Lebedev was keenly interested in the conceptual and compositional challenges of juxtapositions. His exploration of similar surfaces, such as wood, in different media (e.g., oil painting and collage), testifies to his experimental nature.
