It has been noted that the descriptive and celebratory approach toward nature of Levitan's later pictures such as "Lake" have much in common with the writings of Maxim Gorky (see Alexei Fiodorov-Davydov, "Isaak Levitan," Aurora, Leningrad, 1981, p.16).
