Malevich, K. S. "Bathers". 1928 - 1932

Notes: Bathers. The condition of the peasant, which interested Malevich throughout his life, fueled a powerful series of images during his second figurative period (1928-1932). "Bathers" conveys the sense of helplessness and resignation which characterized peasant life during these years of famine and brutal deprivation. Note the featureless face of the central figure, which communicates a quality of timeless tragedy. At the same time, Malevich tempers the somber aspects of the painting with bold colors, symbolizing the peasants' resilience and spirit and producing a work of undeniable grandeur and brilliance.
