"Peasants" is one of the most colorful and satisfying of the Second Peasant Series (1928-1932). The best of these paintings deal with profound emotions in a riot of carnival colors. "Peasants" and other similar canvases recall Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, the clown who is dressed for frolic but crushed by grief.
