Malevich, K. S. "Male Portrait". 1932

Notes: Male Portrait. From the late 1920s until his death, Malevich returned to painting portraits. Some recall the Fauve painters in their brilliant colors and abbreviated forms, while others remind the viewer of the grand manner of Italian Renaissance portraits. Still others follow the conventions of nineteenth-century genre portraits. The color and facture seen in the painting shown here recalls the work of the Neo-Impressionist, Maximillian Luce, who used small, evenly applied dots of pigment to compose forms.
