From the late 1920s until his death, Malevich often painted portraits. Some recall the Fauve painters in their brilliant colors and abbreviated forms, while others remind the viewer of the grand manner of Italian Renaissance portraits. Still others follow the conventions of nineteenth-century genre portraits.
