S.I. Mamontov was a close friend of many artists and the great patron of the famous Abramtzevo artistic community, which took its name from his country estate. The artists who belonged to his circle frequently painted portraits of him and his family. This portrait of a shy Mara Mamontov typifies Serov's ability to describe mood and personality.
