James, Nicholas, and Ignatius
Notes:
Selected saints: the Brother of Jesus, St. James, St. Nicholas, and St. Ignatius the God-Bearer
This fine, late fifteenth century icon is from the Church of the Dormition in the Murom Monastery, Pudost. It joined the collection of the Russian State Museum in 1957. The pastel shades, as well as the contrast between the simplicity of the major forms and the detail of pattern within those forms are visually striking. They reflect the growing influence of the School of Moscow on Novgorodian painters in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries.
